Manufacturing electricity consumption - the challenge:
With a total of 580 employees and trailer production of over 110 units a week, SDC Trailers board of directors decided to seek a solution to get under control their soaring energy costs of manufacturing electricity consumption . ResourceKraft energy monitoring software was chosen to show SDC where and when energy savings could be made.
Benefits:
In the past, SDC Trailers had limited insight into their energy usage – just a monthly utility bill plus some 5-day old profile data from their main meter. ResourceKraft Advisor built a custom package monitoring Electricity, Liquid Petroleum Gas and Heating Oil.
There was no shut down required during installation, hence manufacturing did not suffer during this time
Management was trained on how to utilise the many tools that Advisor provides. Automated reporting, out of hours, max threshold, KPI, etc.
The system provides many tools that can help make achieving the ISO50001 energy standard much easier
Numerous actions were taken on the basis of the new information:
- Systems were put in place to proactively manage consumption
- SMS Text & Email Alerts were setup to reinforce compliance
- Lighting was discovered to be inefficient and was replaced
- Analytics from ResourceKraft Advisor means that energy consumption is continuously reviewed for further savings
- A 5% reduction in overall electricity consumption has been targeted across the group and savings are expected to be considerable

Report card:
The total site electricity consumption is trending towards a 5% year on year reduction. Overall reduction in usage across Electricity, Liquid Petroleum Gas and Heating Oil, despite a considerable increase in activities.
